Work Environment and Job Overview

I work remotely as a freelancer. My job is to analyze business data for several businesses. All assignments and data are transferred to my working systems.

I connect with my customers via online platforms and networks. This working style really gave me an edge working as a business intelligence architect.

It allows me to develop a flexible working schedule. Thus, I can finish the assigned tasks and requests more effectively.

Sometimes my presence at the business’ headquarters is necessary. I come to the workplace to join important company meetings or meet with the directors.

The following sections will discuss my daily tasks and schedule in more detail.

Business intelligence architects can work remotely from homes

7:30 AM

I usually wake up at 7:30 AM to prepare a cup of coffee and follow my personal routines. I spend half an hour doing the exercise before taking a quick shower. It helps me regain energy and get in the right mood for work.

9:00 AM

The first thing to do is to look over my work calendar and emails. It helps me check if there are any urgent deliverables that need to be finished.

Then, I will join a daily stand-up meeting hosted by the company’s intelligence architect manager. This team meeting consists of many architects who work on the same project as me.

I will go on to explain the progress of the project that I’m currently handling. I also report on the roadblocks and problems that occurred during the process.

For example, I may not have access to a certain database or document provided. I will report it back to the manager and request full access. This meeting usually lasts around 30 to 45 minutes.

9:45 AM

After the meeting, I will spend the rest of the morning on my tasks. My duty is to develop a dashboard that covers all the company’s business data.

First, I need to check the requirements and plans provided by the business stakeholder. It includes tasks like:

  • Reviewing the database
  • Check the time period of the database
  • Review the visualization the stakeholder desires

Then, I will feed the dataset into a visualization program, and use the same tool to develop the dashboard according to the company’s requests.

For example, I use a bar chart to illustrate the specific numbers in a category. Meanwhile, a line chart is used to show changes in value over a specific period.

11:00 AM

The next step is to review all the dashboards I have built previously. I need to ensure that it’s attractive and simple to convey ideas effectively. Also, my projects must perfectly match the company’s request.

I will review all the values and data to ensure that they are all accurate. Then, I will check the dashboard’s layouts and make necessary adjustments. Finally, I will submit the dashboard to the stakeholder via the online working platform.

1:00 PM

In this time, I will start designing the other remaining dashboard projects assigned by the customers. The same architecting phase repeats as what I did in the morning work.

The company stakeholders often send me feedback and requests for adjustment in the afternoon. It’s my priority to edit the finished projects first before moving on to designing the new ones.

I will review all of the feedback and make successful adjustments. Then, I will resubmit the edited dashboards. It usually takes one editing time before the stakeholder affirms my projects.

5:00 PM

As a freelancer, the income I earn is based on the number of projects I can finish. I always discipline myself to work 8 hours a day and finish my work at 5:00 PM.

Then, I will spend the rest of the day on my personal hobbies and tasks. It’s the typical events that happen in a day of my life.
