For example, a data analyst can study sales reports and identify customers’ demands. Thus, businesses can use the report to focus more on products.
Besides, analysts also help maintain data systems and fix related errors. They use a combination of IT tools, such as data-analyzing software and coding languages.
As a data analyst, I spend most of my time collecting and studying data. The sections below will give you details about my daily tasks and working schedule.
Workplace and Job Overview
Data analysts can work at any place as long as they have access to databases and networks. They can use the tools on their computing devices to collect and analyze different data sources.
I choose to work as a freelance analyst. It allows me to seek different customers and develop multiple work contracts. Also, I can flexibly manage my schedule.
There are multiple online platforms where I can seek customers. They can be businesses or companies that need an analyst to bring the outcomes they desire.
1. Email & Working Schedule (8:00 AM)
I usually wake up at 8:00 AM, and I brew a hot coffee and prepare a quick breakfast. Then, I will browse my email and make a checklist for work.
Email and phone calls are the two main methods I use to exchange files as well as contact clients. I will check if there are any messages or new assignments sent by my customers during the morning.
Then, I will review today’s working schedules, including the unfinished projects from previous days and new assignments. At 8:30 AM, I will read some journals.
The journals will keep me updated with the latest trends and events. The information and data from these sources can benefit my work in multiple ways. It’s also a short time for relaxation before jumping to the morning’s tasks.
2. Project Progress Report (9:00 AM)
I turn on my laptop and have a quick call with some clients. The two sides will do the checking and review the current project’s progress. I will report all my work progress and upcoming plans to the client.
Then, I start dealing with a massive volume of data. Take the online merchandise store, for instance. I first need to collect sales data from numerous reports.
I access the client’s database and network to collect more information. Then, I will list the products that generate the highest sales revenues and vice versa.
I also analyze why customers choose to purchase a certain product. What are the features that make it stand out from the other competitors? I use a database system to store all the information before studying it.
This process requires high creativity and strategic-thinking ability. I must ensure that the analyzed outcomes can benefit the clients.
3. Data Collection, Analysis & Reporting (11:00 AM)
The time spent on collecting data varies based on the project scale. It took me hours to analyze all the available products featured on the online store.
The next step is to make a detailed survey and reports to back up my analysis. Customers will review the report carefully and implement changes.
For this task, I used data visualization software to arrange my analysis. When the report is ready, I will send it to the client via email.
4. Studying Customers’ Data (1:00 PM)
After lunch, I will return to the projects at 1:00 PM. The length of each project depends on the data volume and the client’s desired outcomes.
Clients send me all the data sources and reports. They also grant me access to their database systems. My work is to study these databases and spot patterns.
Studying data is one of the most challenging tasks. I have to use my business knowledge and analysis skills to come up with outcomes.
5. Rest (5:00 PM)
I finish my work at 5:00 PM and spend the evening on my personal hobbies. Maintaining a schedule helps me manage time and deliver consistent results. Therefore, I rarely work in the evening except when the deadline is too tight.
