What is it like to be a data architect? I don’t work solely with data. Aside from the love for databases, I also bring strong analytical and security skills to the table.
So let me tell you a day in the life of a data architect. I will show you what I do and how to handle all my daily tasks right now!
A data architect is an IT professional who analyzes and plans an organization’s data infrastructure. They work in various industries because data is crucial for almost every company.
Data architects help companies store and manage their data. Their goal is to ensure business leaders receive accurate information to make decisions.
These architects may have different roles. For example, some create a vision for how a company should handle data and make it happen. Meanwhile, others work on specific data projects.
In the US, data architects are among the well-paid jobs. They can earn around $139,946 per year on average. Yet, the exact salary depends on where they work, their experience, and their industry.
I spend my days keeping an eye on the data system. I also create data models and make sure everything runs smoothly. And the best part? I get to optimize the system’s performance to make it even better!
Every day brings me new challenges. But I believe that my knowledge and skills are excellent assistants to deal with them!
My days are different, depending on the project at hand. However, my main focus is keeping the data system in shape.
I often kickstart my day by running tests to ensure everything is running smoothly. If any issues pop up, I’m quick to troubleshoot and fix them.
A crucial part of my role is setting up KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). To me, they are rulers that help me measure and track how well the data system is performing.
These KPIs also assist me in assessing the effectiveness of the system. I use them to identify areas for improvement, too.
For example, if the system doesn’t meet the KPI, I will analyze the situation, then recommend potential solutions. Usually, I have to adopt new technologies to enhance the existing framework.
Besides, I have weekly and monthly projects. Depending on the requirements of each project, I handle different tasks. Yet, they aim for only one purpose: developing and maintaining the database system.
Collaboration is key in my work. I work closely with software architects, design analysts, and system architects to understand our company’s needs. After each meeting, we ensure the data infrastructure aligns with our goals.
I also spend time developing data models for various applications. This task involves building structures, such as views, metadata tables, or relevant database elements. They all can help my company organize and store data efficiently.
Data flow is my responsibility, too. Thus, I design database applications, such as mechanisms and interfaces for transferring data.
To guarantee effective access to the database, I implement features like data partitions or temporary tables. By optimizing these tools, I can enhance the database’s performance.
Another part of my job is demonstrating how the database works. It can be complicated since I deal with different security measures to make sure it performs well.
Furthermore, I develop and maintain procedural queries and codes for applications. Then, I use those procedures to ensure my company stores and handles the data correctly.
I often work more than 40 hours a week. So, my schedule extends beyond the standard 9-to-5 routine. However, the regular work schedule allows me to establish a set routine. Hence, I can manage my tasks effectively.
If you want a flexible schedule, work as a freelancer. But make sure you are independent and can handle everything on your own.
Data architects work in various industries, such as entertainment, healthcare, technology, finance, and even government agencies. As long as the organization uses data, they need data architects to perform relevant tasks.
The architects work in office settings. Sometimes, they collaborate with data centers to ensure the infrastructure’s integrity.
Another case is remote work. In other words, data architects can work from home or other locations with the rise of flexible work arrangements.
