A Day in the Life of a Game Designer

The designers duty is to ensure the game they produce can bring the best entertainment experience. From the storyline to visuals, they will handle all aspects of a game product.

With my experiences, I don’t have similar days working as a game designer. The tasks assigned for a day depend on the type of products I’m working on.

Workplace And Job Overview

I’m working as a designer in a game production firm. My company specializes in developing online computer games and entertainment services.

As a game designer, I will work with other experts like programmers and game artists to build a complete gaming product. I will direct all the project’s members to ensure that they can produce high-quality work.

Besides, I also manage time and distribute assignments to all the production members. In other words, I’m the head of the project who monitors and manages the production process of game products.

I can spend a lot of time communicating with the other professionals in the firm and reviewing their progress and proposing adjustments.

Direct and monitor the game development process

8:30 AM

I attend the office at 8:30 AM and have a 30-minute discussion with the game planner. The planner is responsible for developing the game’s storyline and details like quests and campaigns.

The team is currently working on an adventure game project. The planner has nearly finished building all the ideas and visions for this game.

As the storyline is the foundation that dictates all other elements of the game, I will need to monitor and adjust it frequently. If I spot a better idea or a feature that should be removed, I will contact the planner and ask for an adjustment.

9:30 AM

Then, I will have another short meeting with the visual design team. I will give ideas for game footage and direct the art production process.

For example, the planner has developed a conversation between the two characters in the game. I need to direct the visual design team to build the footage that captures this conversation.

I will review all small scenes and control their visual aspects and timing. I also discuss with the game artists to brainstorm better ideas for each footage.

Review the work and suggest adjustments

11:00 AM

Besides the storyline and visuals, there are departments that produce sound effects and the user interface. I will gradually rotate to these departments and direct all the members on their tasks.

If there are any technical errors, I can support them in solving the problems. During the process, I also give the members more inspiration to help them keep up with their schedules.

1:00 PM

I will head back to the office for work after a lunch break. I can spend the afternoon reviewing all the projects submitted by the members.

During this time, I will develop a report that includes feedback and the details that need to be adjusted. Then, I will discuss these points with the producers.

I also check if the production process is catching up with the schedule. I will set up tight deadlines and push the production speed if necessary.

4:00 PM

I will join a meeting with the company’s board at about 4:00 PM. In this session, I will report on the project’s progress and upcoming plans.

I also calculate the project’s budget and when it will be completed. The company’s board will review my report carefully and provide feedback.
