I’m working as a full-time computer operator. There are many tasks I have to perform every day.

  • Check and maintain connection: I regularly check different types of connections. They are on devices like monitors or keyboards. Sometimes, I work with specialized machines.
  • Monitor device performance: I also check how the devices are working. Then, I can identify problems and fix them soon.
  • Manage computer networks: One of the most critical tasks is to monitor computer networks. I ensure big computers can work well together. Sometimes, this task involves databases.
  • Maintain hardware: I focus on the physical parts of networks and computers, too. I perform routine maintenance to keep them running at their best.

How To Become A Computer Operator

Before working as a computer operator, I struggled with learning and improving myself. Here is what I have gone through:

1. Get A Formal Education

To start, you need to finish your high school. The high school degree shows that you completed your basic education.

After the 12th grade, you can apply for a job. However, you should take extra computer courses or classes to work as a computer operator.

If you want to have a better chance of getting this job, study more. Employers often prioritize candidates with a bachelor’s degree. You can consider computer science or related fields.

You can learn more as you work. Then, you may want to try more specific roles, such as a network administrator or a data executive. These advanced jobs also deal with networks and computer systems.

After finishing your school studies, get more certifications. They prove you are good at managing databases or handling computer systems.

When you are certified, it will be easier to find a job because employers like skilled workers. You can also learn new and cool things with computers.

So which certificates should you get? Well, a lot. But since you cannot achieve all of them, consider these three options first:

  • ITI (Industrial Training Institute): This training center helps you learn about computers. You will also practice programming them.
  • CCC (Course on Computer Concepts): If you want to focus on the basic ideas of computers first, choose this certification.
  • BCC (Basic Computer Course): Like CCC, BCC teaches you the basics of using and managing computers.

3. Hone The Necessary Skills

There are many tasks for a computer operator to handle. Thus, if you want to work in this role, practice some crucial skills as follows:


When computers have issues, you need problem-solving skills to find the root causes. Then, find the best way to get things working again.

To practice this skill, I tackle coding challenges online. And when I encounter computer problems, I break them into smaller pieces. Then, checking each piece helps me find out the cause quickly.

I have mentioned some certifications to take your first step into computer operations. But if you want to upgrade your skills, earn more certificates.

The best options to consider are:

  • CST (Computer Service Technician)
  • SOC (System Operator Certification)
  • Operator Certification
  • CNCT (Certified Network Computer Technician)

5. Get Hands-On Training

Getting hands-on training means learning by doing. This way, you practice to become good at something. In the case of a computer operator, you need to work with computers.

Studying is not enough to be a good computer operator. Thus, try to gain hands-on experience. Fortunately, there are many ways to do it.

For example, you can try internships. Companies welcome new computer operators to help with their systems.

Vocational training programs are also a good idea. The government organizes classes that teach you practical skills needed for the job.

Plus, following other computer operators or those who work in the same field on the internet. They often share cool stuff. You can also come across job openings sometimes.

The salary of a computer operator depends on their experience and education.


The more experience you have, the higher your salary is. I have been working in this position for six years. Thus, I can make $72,500 annually. Meanwhile, my boss, who has many years of experience, can earn more than that.


If you have a diploma or certificate, you may make about $45,000 per year or more. Those with a bachelor’s degree have an average salary of $68,000 annually.

Is It Hard To Become A Computer Operator?

Yes. You need to learn about computers and how they work. Sometimes, they have problems, and you have to fix them as a computer operator.

You will also learn some skills to handle all of your tasks. Both technical and soft skills are needed. I also had many difficulties when following this career path.
