A trainer works for an educational institute, such as a college or tech school. Yet, the demands for computer trainers are not limited to educational institutions.
They can work as freelancers and design their online courses or classes. Many tech companies also hire computer trainers to train their staff. The trainers will teach the employees to use the corporate’s software, for example.
Also, trainers can teach all skills relating to computers. For example, a trainer can open a training course on building websites or data analysis.
The knowledge and skills you can teach as a computer trainer are endless. It ranges from computer software and hardware to technology. So, computer trainers can work in various environments and fields.

Workplace and Job Overview
I am working as a freelance computer trainer, so I will seek customers via online platforms. There are many organizations that hire me to train their employees.
My targeted learners are typically staff working for medium-scale organizations. I will design a training program that suits the company’s goals and requests.
For example, I am teaching at an accounting and research firm. The company hires me to train its staff on using accounting programs and data analysis tools.
I have met with the company’s manager and set up a work contract. It includes detailed plans like:
- What area of skills and knowledge will I teach?
- What are the goals the company desires?
- How many training sessions should I hold weekly?
- Detailed time and training schedule
I can work for multiple firms at a time and teach different areas of computing knowledge. Therefore, I have to set up a flexible working schedule.

1. Email & Working Schedule (8:00 AM)
At this time, I will review and check my email and working calendar. I also normally check the training schedule the previous night.
Email and phone numbers are the two main contact methods between me and the customers. It will help inform me of the classes’ schedules and locations. I also know if the companies send me any notifications or special requests.
2. Prepare a Training Session (9:00 AM)
I have daily training sessions as I’m currently training for a few companies. Most training sessions will start at 9:00 or 10:00 AM.
During this time, I will set up the computing infrastructure first. Then, I will review the training’s knowledge and plan featured in the upcoming session.
3. Training Session (10:00 AM)
Most of my client companies spare a separate work office for training sessions. The classes begin when the company’s staff attend the training room.
I begin with a brief chat with the employees to break the tension. Then, I will go through today’s training skills and goals.
A training session typically lasts 90 minutes. Normally, I will devote 30 minutes to teaching concepts and theoretical knowledge. Then, I will spend the next 20 minutes instructing employees on practicing.
For example, I will guide some staff to use a computing program used for analyzing data. I will go through all of its basic features first. Then, I will instruct the staff on using the software for various tasks.
The staff will spend the remaining 40 minutes practicing on their computers. I will provide specific guidance and assistance during the process.
4. Training Progress Report (11:30 AM)
The training session ends at about 11:30 AM. In this remaining time, I will build a report on the staff’s training progress, and submit it to the company’s manager.
Additional Tasks
The process illustrates what happens in a typical training session of mine. I also have training sessions in the afternoon, following the same steps and durations.
Besides teaching, I spend a lot of time consulting with the company’s managers and staff. I will address their difficulty and design a training session that can solve their problems.
In my free time, I can design the training materials and prepare for the upcoming sessions.
What Makes a Good Computer Trainer?
According to my experience, excellent computer trainers don’t have to be the ones with the most competent skills. It lies in the way you can interact with learners and convey knowledge.
A good trainer must well understand students’ needs. Thus, they can help people get better at using the computer with guidance and simple explanations.
Communication and teaching skills are the valuable qualities of a computer trainer. So, you should devote your time to honing these essential skills.
